Whale Sharks in the Neighborhood

The waters around Roatan Island are known for being a haven for whale sharks, the largest fish species in the world. These gentle giants are a sight to behold as they gracefully glide through the crystal-clear waters, making Roatan a premier destination for snorkelers and divers seeking an awe-inspiring encounter with these magnificent creatures. From March to June, whale sharks congregate in the area to feed on plankton and small fish, offering nature enthusiasts a unique opportunity to witness these majestic animals in their natural habitat. Whether observing them from a boat or swimming alongside them in the ocean, encountering whale sharks off Roatan Island is an unforgettable experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Usually cruising by on their way past our neighbor island Utila, these amazing creatures can reach 32 feet long and 20,000 lbs as adults. Our manager Ana captured these amazing images on the east side of our reef, just a few minutes from the villa. Just one of the many amazing experiences you can enjoy while visiting Vista Verde Roatan!
