Discover Roatan

Roatan is a mountainous ridge of an island located 30 miles off the north coast of Honduras. It is roughly 40 miles long, and about 4 miles at its widest. The principal economic activities are tourism and fishing. Roatan is located along the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean (second worldwide only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef), providing plentiful opportunities for marine activities like diving and fishing. Accessible neighboring islands include Utila, Guanaja, and Helene, also known for their excellent diving, fishing, and plentiful marine life.

Area Information

  • While Spanish is the legal language for Honduras, due to its long history as British territory, English is the primary language on Roatan.

  • The Honduran currency is called the Lempira. US Dollars are accepted virtually everywhere on the island. The exchange rate is approximately 24 lempiras per dollar.

  • West Bay
Considered one of the more picturesque beaches on Roatan, WestBay beach is lined by many of the Island’’s resorts. Large infinity pools and palapa bars are seaside with local vendors setting up tables for tourists to buy souvenirs. Enjoy a hot day at the white sand beach with one of Roatan’s fresh frozen drinks while watching boats pass in the clear turquoise waters!

    West End
West End is the furthest point west on Roatan’s north shore and contains many of the Islands dive operations, restaurants, bars, and local shopping. Within a 20 minute walk along the beachsand road, you can find local stores with local wood carvings, stone jewelry, linens, and hammocks, along with restaurants of many different cuisines and popular nightlife spots.

    Camp Bay Beach
If you are looking for a secluded beach for privacy and quiet, Camp Bay Beach is the place for you. Located approximately 30 minutes east of the Villa, you can find a white sand beach lined with coconut trees. Be aware the road is unpaved and sometimes requires a high ground clearance vehicle to navigate.

    Coxen Hole
For shopping, food, and the busy cruise ship dock, Coxen Hole has a variety of places to try local dishes, shop for souvenirs, and immerse yourself in daily Island Life. Also the capitol of the island, Coxen Hole contains many of the Islands commercial buildings, banks, and hotels. Taxis and van services are readily available to travel, but walking is the best way to visit all the small shops and local stands.

  • Roatan is located in the western Caribbean roughly 40 miles from the Honduras mainland north coast, very safely south of the main hurricane belt.

While we do see tropical storms occasionally, rainy season on Roatan (which usually runs from early Oct to mid Dec) usually involves rainfall at night when the air cools off, clearing early to mid-morning.

It’s always a beautiful day on Roatan, no matter what the weather!

  • Roatan is Open!

After some quiet months due to travel restrictions, international flights resumed on August 17, 2020. The following information may be helpful in advance of your flights.

    PREPARE BEFORE YOUR TRIP

All travelers entering or exiting Honduras must complete the immigration precheck form at https://prechequeo.inm.gob.hn. Travelers will receive a confirmation email, which they should print and carry with them.

Fully vaccinated individuals with their original vaccination certificate are no longer required to provide proof of a negative COVID test upon entry in Honduras. Vaccinated travelers must provide the original vaccination certificate documenting complete COVID-19 vaccination (two doses of most vaccines; one dose of Johnson & Johnson) with at least 14 days after receipt of the final dose.

Passengers who cannot provide proof of full vaccination must hand-carry the negative test results for a PCR or rapid test taken less than 72 hours before entry into Honduras. Passengers must show the test results at check-in.

Based on local conditions, some movement restrictions may still be in effect, such as curfews or permission to transit. Tourists are often exempt from these restrictions, so we advise carrying a copy of your flight info at all times as proof of your tourist status. Most Roatan businesses are applying health screening procedures at their entrance, such as temperature checks, hands and shoe sanitation, wear of face masks and social distancing according to the activity you’re doing or place you are visiting.

Depending on your destination country negative tests results might be required before boarding your departure flight.

(July 28th, 2021) If returning to the United States, all airline passengers ages two years and older must provide a negative COVID-19 viral test taken within 24 hours calendar days of travel. Alternatively, travelers to the U.S. may provide documentation from a licensed health care provider of having recovered from COVID-19 in the 90 days preceding travel. Casa Vista Verde can help arrange testing either at the Villa or at the Local Medical Facility at guest preference.

Casa Vista Verde staff has been trained with the most recent bio-security protocols to ensure the health and safety of all. Our open spaces, private beach, pool, nature trails, and sunny warm weather should provide a perfect healthy refuge for your stay.
